Abracadabra, Aramaic is alive

After the silliness about language in the Passion, here's a more serious article on keeping Aramaic alive. (Via Mirabilis.)

Speaking of silly, it occurs to me that all these years I've been confusing Aramaic with Amharic, a language of Ethiopia. I'm not sure which entry in Ethnologue corresponds to the "Syrian Aramaic" in the Daily Star article; perhaps it is Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, although there seem to be a number of other Aramaics as well.

It's "Western Neo-Aramaic", the language of Ma`lula, Jubb`adin, and Bakh`a.

Thanks, Lameen. Here's the Ethnologue entry for Western Neo-Aramaic, according to which it just has 15,000 speakers.
